Peter Obi, the Labour Party's presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has publicly appealed to President Bola Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Addressing journalists in Onitsha on Saturday, Obi highlighted the need for the government to comply with a court order granting Kanu bail.
"The continued detention of Mr. Kanu, despite the court's bail ruling, is unwarranted. The government must respect the rule of law. We live in a democracy, not a dictatorship, and arbitrary actions outside the law are unacceptable," Obi stated. He emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring fair treatment for all individuals in similar situations.
Obi also expressed deep concerns about Nigeria's deteriorating security situation. "The primary responsibility of any government is to secure its citizens. The alarming rise in killings, abductions, and other crimes is pushing Nigeria towards instability. It is troubling that Nigeria is now regarded as one of the most insecure places on earth, which risks leading us towards a failed state," he added.
Obi's call for Kanu's release echoes similar sentiments from Atiku Abubakar, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party's presidential candidate and former vice president. Following recent attacks on Nigerian soldiers by suspected gunmen, Abubakar urged the federal government to seek a political resolution to Kanu's detention to reduce violence in the South-East.
Nnamdi Kanu was apprehended and extradited to Nigeria from Kenya on July 1, 2021, after initially fleeing the country following a military raid on his residence during President Muhammadu Buhari's administration.
