At the 40th anniversary and reunion of the '84 set of Kagara Old Boys Association, former Senator Shehu Sani voiced concerns over the security challenges plaguing northern Nigeria, comparing the administrations of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking at the event held at Ahmadu Bahago Secondary School in Minna, Niger State, Senator Sani emphasized the need for a genuine commitment from the government to resolve security issues. He highlighted the closure of Government Science College, Kagara, since bandits attacked the school in 2021 and abducted students.
Addressing attendees, Sani remarked, “The security challenges would be over in the whole country because what we have now is better than what we had during the Buhari administration. There is evidence that many top terrorists have been eliminated by our security forces."
Comparing administrations, he continued, “Under Buhari administration, we had series of attacks on schools including Green Field University, Kaduna, Bathel Baptist School, Kaduna, Government Science College, Kagara, among others. So, we are hopeful that things would be better."
Sani expressed support for the Niger State Government's suggestion to temporarily relocate Government Science College, Kagara, but stressed the need to return the school to its original location once security improves.
He added, “Northern Nigeria must take education seriously; we lag behind with the highest number of out-of-school children today. The activities of bandits and terrorists have destroyed the educational fabric of northern Nigeria."
Highlighting the impact on education, Sani lamented, “The school we used to call our own has been deserted because bandits once attacked and took students and teachers hostage.”
The event underscored ongoing concerns over security and education in northern Nigeria, urging proactive measures to safeguard schools and enhance educational opportunities for the region's youth.
