A London woman who sent her teenage son to their native Nigeria because she disapproved of his lifestyle has been jailed for eight months.

Edirin Onogeta-Idogun, 17, from Newham, flew from the UK to Nigeria last July.

Edirin Onogeta-Idogun moved to London seven years ago

His parents Lydia Erhire and John Idogun were issued with a court order to return the boy, who is believed to be with his father in Lagos.

When they failed to do so, Mrs Erhire was convicted at the Old Bailey of being in contempt of court.

Edirin was born in Nigeria but moved to London with his mother seven years ago.

He had been studying for his GCSEs and had been due to transfer to a college in Hackney to study business and media.
'Significant risk'

Last year he feared he may be taken to Nigeria and forced to marry against his will, his solicitors said, and a Forced Marriage Protection Order was issued on 8 July.

He attended school for the final time on 12 July and it is thought he flew to the African country about four days later.

The High Court ruled Edirin was a resident of England and was entitled to continue to live there.

His removal from England was contrary to the protection order and he was at "significant risk" while in Nigeria, it decided.

THE LAWMAKERS OF THE UK OR COURT MUST ALSO UNDERSTAND THAT THE CHILD IS ALSO A CITIZEN OF NIGERIA AND THEY SHOULD SHOW CIVILITY TOWARDS THE ISSUE SINCE THEY CLAIM THEY ARE SO CIVILIZED ABOUT ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING THEY DO.

Contempt of Court is a serious crime under the law of Strict Liability Rule which s. 1 of the Contempt of Court Act 1981 affirms, passed by the UK Parliament.

This is the rule of law which the parents must obey, or go to prison. May be, serving the prison term may be the best option to prevent their child from coming to UK to be a gay. Besides their lawyer must have advised them accordingly.

There is nothing to be surprised about.

No london Court will jail a mother if both parents agree as to where is best to raise an under-aged child. Was he not sent to his father?Who are the parties in the court case? Story story!

There most be somthing else  to it. No parent will be jailed if both the father and mother decieds on where the child lives

i think the guy must have contacted the british government without the consent of the parents that he wants to go back to the UK or somebody else petitioned the government that guy is being kept in nigerian against his wish. civilization none sense.

My bro...when you tell people something like this...they wont believe...but it's true because every pikin born here is  registered as a britico subject and the thereby belongs to the government...you are just a custodian...

The story is not true. Old Bailey is a criminal court and not a family law court. That a child is british does not take away parents right to decide where he lives. If both parents agree, the child can live with either parent.

There is nothing to it....even in Nigeria or anywhere in the world you will be jailed for being in contempt of court. The woman wasnt jailed for sending her kid to Nigeria, but because the child alleged a risk of forced marriage (apparently this is false)to him in Nigeria and when the suit was pending the kid was sent to Nigeria in disobedience of a court order.
