Kafayat Shafau, popularly known as Kaffy, a renowned Nigerian dancer and choreographer, has voiced concerns about the misuse of dance as a cover for prostitution in an interview with Saturday Beats.
"Dance is not a hustler's game," Kaffy emphasized, highlighting her observation that some individuals exploit dance to mask activities linked to prostitution. She lamented that while dance is an art form, the sensual aspects can sometimes overshadow the skill and artistic expression. "There is a line I cannot cross, and clothes I cannot wear," she asserted, stressing that one can be sensual without resorting to nudity.
Addressing aspiring dancers, Kaffy urged authenticity and advised against succumbing to societal pressures that may lead them astray from their true aspirations. "Choose your path and stay true to it," she advised, noting that dance offers diverse career opportunities beyond music videos and clubs, such as dance coaching, injury prevention, therapy, and more.
Contrary to the notion that women do not support each other as much as men do, Kaffy argued that both genders exhibit similar behaviors of both support and competition. "Women are more emotionally expressive, so conflicts may appear more apparent," she stated, highlighting that men also engage in behaviors that can undermine their peers.
In conclusion, Kaffy underscored the importance of integrity and self-awareness in the dance industry, urging practitioners to uphold the true essence of the art form amidst its growing popularity.
