Kafayat Ajoke, a resident of Ilorin, has taken legal action to dissolve her marriage to Aminullahi Ibrahim, citing his inability to provide for their family's basic needs following his job loss.
Appearing in court on Friday, Ajoke urged the judge to grant her a divorce and award her custody of their two children. She also requested a monthly maintenance and feeding allowance of N100,000 from her estranged husband.
"I noticed a change in my husband after he lost his job a year ago. He has not been able to provide adequate funds for our family's food," Ajoke expressed during the proceedings.
Responding to the divorce petition, Aminullahi Ibrahim agreed to the dissolution of their marriage but disputed the requested maintenance amount. Given his current unemployment, he argued that he could only afford N2,000 monthly for their upkeep, significantly less than the amount sought by his wife.
"I am without a job and therefore do not have sufficient funds. This is the primary reason why my wife is seeking a divorce," Ibrahim explained before the court.
Judge Idris Etsu presided over the case and listened to the arguments presented by both parties. He scheduled the next hearing for July 30, where he will deliver his judgment on the matter.
