
The Anambra State Police Command has announced the recovery of over 20 improvised explosive devices (IEDs), firearms, and other items during recent operations conducted across the state. These operations, carried out in collaboration with other security agencies, were detailed by Commissioner of Police Nnaghe Itam at a press briefing in Awka on Friday.
During the briefing, CP Itam also presented 13 suspects who were apprehended across various locations for crimes including kidnapping, armed robbery, and cult-related activities. Among the arrested individuals were Emeka Okolo, 29, from Ihiala, Anambra State; Uchenna John, 21, from Ebonyi State; and Victor Iniukpong, 31, from Akwa Ibom State. The trio was captured while attempting to disable the tracking device on a vehicle belonging to a kidnapping victim abducted on July 15 in Nimo community, Njikoka LGA. During the abduction, the suspects also fatally shot one person.
The Commissioner highlighted that the arms and ammunition were seized from these suspects. He further revealed that the police, alongside other security forces, discovered about 20 IEDs strategically placed by gunmen for potential detonation throughout the state.
He elaborated, “The recovered explosives include attacking Mile IEDs from the ESN Camp at Ugbenu, near Isuaniocha in Awka North LGA; attacking Mile IEDs from Aguluezechukwu ESN Camp; six light-and-spark IEDs from Ogbunka ESN Camp; nine light-and-spark IEDs from another ESN Camp; and two light-and-spark IEDs from a vehicle abandoned by ESN along the Ogbunka axis.”
These findings underscore the ongoing efforts by the Anambra State Police and their partners to curb criminal activities and ensure the safety of residents.
