Security personnel at Bayero University, Kano, have arrested two individuals who posed as lecturers to sell books to unsuspecting new students. The suspects, identified as David Iluebe from Edo State and Chike Eke from Delta State, were apprehended for impersonation and fraud.

According to a statement by Bala Abdullahi, the university's Publication Secretary, the suspects infiltrated a lecture hall at the Faculty of Engineering and falsely introduced themselves to 100-level students as department lecturers. They pressured the students into purchasing four textbooks on subjects such as Use of English, Statistics, Nigerian People and Culture, and Algebra and Geometry Mathematics, claiming these books were essential for their Continuous Assessment (CA) and that failure to buy them would result in failing their courses.

Frightened by the threats, the students bought several copies of the textbooks. However, the scheme unraveled when security operatives, alerted by a report, arrested the suspects on July 25, 2024, for criminal trespass, impersonation, and cheating.

During the preliminary investigation, the suspects admitted to the charges, claiming they were authors of the books and were attempting to make a living due to unemployment. They also revealed that this was their second visit to the state, having previously targeted the Kano State Polytechnic.

The statement indicated that the books found in their possession were of poor quality and suspected to be pirated. "This is a very disturbing emerging trend in our tertiary institutions, which are being invaded by crooks and charlatans masquerading as academicians to dupe and exploit our unsuspecting students," Abdullahi remarked.

The suspects are to be handed over to the police for further action, while the university plans to increase student awareness about such fraudulent activities. "The management of the university warns students and the general public to be wary of such impersonators," Abdullahi added, noting that surveillance has been increased on campus to prevent future incidents.

Students bought books because they were told they were ESSENTIAL  for their continuous assessment AND that failure to buy the books could lead to them failing the course is not new!!!!’

This practice has been going on in our Nigerian universities  for DECADES.

Thank goodness it took two FAKE LECTURERS to EXPOSE yet another 419 Nigeria scam.

Let’s sit back and see what will be done about it in ALL our Nigeria  universities
