A 49-year-old Nigerian man, Dirichukwu Patrick Nweke, has been arrested in connection with an alleged $9 million drug ring operating out of the Villawood Immigration Detention Centre in Sydney.
Nweke, who was awaiting deportation, and an accomplice are accused of trafficking large quantities of methylamphetamine through an encrypted messaging service.
New South Wales Police announced on Saturday, July 27, 2024, that they raided Villawood Detention Centre and discovered two kilograms of methamphetamine, valued at $165,000, concealed inside porridge boxes. During a search of a unit at the facility on July 11, authorities also found three mobile phones.
Nweke faces multiple charges, including directing a criminal group and supplying a large commercial quantity of prohibited drugs, according to DailyMail reports.
In previous operations, police had seized two kilograms of methylamphetamine and $169,000 in cash linked to the drug syndicate. On Wednesday, detectives discovered 750 grams of methylamphetamine and 90 grams of heroin hidden in a toilet bowl during a search of a residence in Liverpool. Police believe this was an attempt to dispose of the drugs. Additional heroin was found on the bathroom floor, and $325,000 in cash, along with an encrypted electronic device, was recovered.
Police also arrested a 24-year-old man alleged to be a runner for Nweke. The man faces charges of supplying prohibited drugs, participating in a criminal group, and other offenses.
Both suspects were denied bail after brief court appearances. The investigation highlights the extent of illicit drug operations, even within detention facilities, as authorities continue to dismantle organized crime syndicates.
