Former President Donald Trump intensified his racially charged criticism of Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday by sharing a photograph of her wearing a traditional Indian sari. This move comes as Trump continues to falsely claim that Harris, a Democratic presidential candidate, is not truly Black.
The controversy began when Trump accused Harris of only recently acknowledging her Black heritage. On his social media platform, Trump posted a picture of Harris in Indian attire, standing with her mother and other maternal relatives, and accompanied it with a message that seemed both sarcastic and appreciative.
"Thank you, Kamala, for the nice picture you sent from many years ago!" Trump wrote. "Your warmth, friendship, and love of your Indian heritage are very much appreciated."
J.D. Vance, Trump's vice-presidential running mate, commended Trump for his candidness and criticized Harris as a "chameleon," suggesting she adapts her identity to suit political needs.
Vice President Harris, whose father is a Black immigrant from Jamaica, has consistently embraced both her Black and South Asian roots. She is an alumna of Howard University, a historically Black institution, and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, a historic Black sorority.
The ongoing attacks underscore the persistent racial and ethnic dynamics at play in American politics as the 2024 presidential race heats up. Harris, who has often spoken about her mixed heritage, continues to navigate these complexities while maintaining her commitment to representing diverse communities across the country.
