Johann Rupert has ascended to the top of Africa's wealth rankings, surpassing Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote to become the continent's richest individual. As of August 2, 2024, Rupert’s net worth stands at $13.65 billion, according to Bloomberg, positioning him as the 154th richest person globally.
Dangote, whose fortune was reported at $13.6 billion on the same day, now ranks as the 156th richest person in the world. This shift comes as Rupert's wealth saw an increase of $1.21 billion between January and August 2024, while Dangote's net worth has been adversely affected by the devaluation of the Naira.
Rupert’s fortune is largely derived from his stake in Cie Financière Richemont, the world’s leading luxury goods company, which includes prestigious brands like Cartier and Dunhill. In contrast, Dangote's wealth predominantly stems from his 86% ownership of Dangote Cement, a major player on the stock market.
This development underscores a significant shift in Africa's wealth landscape, reflecting both the volatility of currency values and the dynamic nature of global luxury markets.
