A 48-year-old man, Abubakar Suleiman, has confessed to a string of pickpocketing incidents across Adamawa State after his arrest on a theft charge. Suleiman, a resident of Mararraban-Mubi in Hong Local Government Area, was apprehended while attempting to steal from a passenger in a Keke NAPEP, a popular commercial transport vehicle, on Bank Road in Jimeta.
Suleiman admitted to targeting areas such as Uba, Mararraban-Mubi, Michika, and Jimeta over the past two years. His method involved making fake phone calls to distract fellow passengers in Keke NAPEPs, allowing him to discreetly steal from them. Despite his claim of being a provision seller by trade, he has been actively engaged in pickpocketing.
The Adamawa State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroje, confirmed the arrest and advised passengers to remain vigilant when using Keke NAPEP services, noting that such vehicles are often used by criminals. He urged the public to be cautious of their surroundings as the state has seen an increase in crimes involving these commercial transport vehicles.
The Keke NAPEP, a widely used mode of transport in Adamawa, has become a hotspot for criminal activity, including theft by young criminals known as "Shila Boys." These individuals often use deceit or intimidation to steal phones and cash from unsuspecting passengers.
