The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has brought to light a disturbing case of corruption, revealing how one of his spiritual daughters was pressured to inflate the cost of a road construction project from N3 million to N33 million.
Speaking during the annual RCCG conference along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Pastor Adeboye highlighted the incident as an example of the pervasive corruption that continues to plague Nigeria. He expressed deep concern that even Christians, who are expected to stand out for their integrity, are increasingly being compromised.
"We talk about corruption in Nigeria. Why do you think corruption has become so deep? It is because we Christians, who are supposed to be peculiar people, are not making any difference," Pastor Adeboye stated. "It's so difficult to even know who is who."
The pastor recounted the experience of one of his spiritual daughters, who was awarded a contract to tar a road in a Nigerian state. After submitting a proposal for N3 million, she was instructed by officials to increase the amount to N33 million. Shocked by the demand, she refused, citing her faith as a reason for rejecting the unethical offer. "She was surprised, turned down the offer, and said, 'I am a child of God, how will I spend the money?' They looked at her as if she was somebody who dropped from the sky," Adeboye shared.
In a similar story, Adeboye recounted another incident involving a different church member. This individual was awarded a contract to tar a road, but upon arriving at the site, she discovered that the road had already been completed. When she reported the situation, she was simply told to collect the money and pay the officials their share. "What is your problem? Collect your money and give us our own," was the response she received.
Pastor Adeboye used these examples to call on Christians to reject double standards and live up to the principles of their faith, emphasizing that the fight against corruption must begin with those who claim to follow Christ. His remarks have sparked a conversation about the role of faith in addressing the deep-rooted issue of corruption in Nigeria.
