Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have successfully intercepted a large shipment of cocaine hidden within heavy-duty automobile parts and traditional Ghanaian fabrics, marking a significant achievement in their nationwide crackdown on drug trafficking.
NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi announced on Sunday, August 11, 2024, that the operation led to the recovery of 12.814 kilograms of cocaine with an estimated value of billions of Naira.
The first seizure occurred on August 5, 2024, when 2.32 kilograms of cocaine was discovered concealed within Ghanaian kente cloths destined for the United Kingdom. The drugs were intercepted at a courier firm in Lagos.
In a subsequent operation, NDLEA sniffer dogs identified another cache of the drug buried in heavy-duty pivot shafts intended for shipment to the United States. This discovery added 10.494 kilograms of cocaine to the total haul.
Babafemi praised the successful operations, emphasizing the NDLEA's commitment to disrupting drug trafficking networks. “The successful interception of these shipments demonstrates our ongoing efforts to combat drug smuggling and ensure that illicit substances do not reach their intended destinations,” he said.
The NDLEA continues to employ advanced intelligence and detection techniques in its fight against drug trafficking.
