The National Igbo Women Assembly (IWA) has called on the Federal Government to withdraw soldiers stationed at checkpoints across the South-East, citing concerns that their presence is causing more harm than good. The group claims that the soldiers, deployed to combat insecurity in the region, are instead engaging in activities that are exacerbating the challenges faced by local residents.
Numerous checkpoints have been established on roads within and leading to the South-East, manned by soldiers tasked with curbing the actions of gunmen and violent secessionist groups. However, travellers and residents have raised complaints about the behavior of these security personnel, accusing them of extortion and creating traffic bottlenecks that leave motorists and commuters frustrated.
Speaking to journalists in Enugu on Friday, August 16, 2024, IWA President Lolo Nneka Chimezie expressed strong criticism of the soldiers, accusing them of abandoning their duty to protect the region in favor of extorting money from motorists and harassing commuters. Chimezie questioned why the soldiers, who were deployed to enhance security, have instead become a source of distress for the people they are supposed to protect.
The IWA also condemned the practice of forcing commuters to disembark from their vehicles and walk through checkpoints on foot before rejoining their vehicles. The group noted that this humiliating practice seems to be unique to the South-East, questioning why the people of the region are subjected to such treatment.
Chimezie further highlighted the irony of criminals being able to carry out attacks and abductions near these military checkpoints without being apprehended, describing the situation as embarrassing. She argued that the soldiers have failed in their mission to secure the region and called for their immediate withdrawal.
"We demand that the Federal Government withdraw these soldiers immediately, as they have failed to protect the people. The police, who are more approachable and less harsh, should be encouraged to take over the responsibility of ensuring security in the region," Chimezie stated.
The call from the IWA underscores growing frustration among South-East residents over the military's presence and actions in the region, as the community seeks more effective and respectful security measures.
