A Nigerian man residing in the UK, Femi Adepoju, has shared how his experience at a church in England has profoundly changed his view on religious practices, particularly in comparison to churches in Nigeria.
In a Facebook post, Adepoju detailed his positive interactions with a Nottingham church, highlighting the level of transparency and accountability he encountered. He described how, after donating to a church cause, he received a detailed report from the pastor on how the funds were utilized.
“I started contributing monthly through direct debit, and the church finance team took the time to thank me, even noting that my donations could potentially reduce my taxes,” Adepoju wrote.
He also praised the church’s food bank initiative, which supports the homeless. Adepoju joined the group and was impressed by the detailed response he received when inquiring about food sourcing.
“There was no condescension, no dismissive remarks—just genuine, respectful communication,” Adepoju noted.
Reflecting on his experience, Adepoju expressed disappointment with the level of accountability in Nigerian churches, stating, “Nigerian churches could benefit from adopting such transparency and efficient management practices.”
He concluded that this experience has made him question whether he could return to attending African churches, even in Nigeria.
