No fewer than nine contestants who made it to the third and final round of the ongoing Hansik (Korean food) competition, are jostling to win the N1 million star prize later this month.
The competition organised by the Korean Cultural Centre Nigeria (KCCN) is centered around the fusion of Korean and Nigerian food using Jang sauces to create a blended cuisine.
The contest which began with an online contest, had 18 contestants proceed to the second round. While winner of the Korean food contest would take home N1 million cash prize, the second and third place winners would go home with N700,000 and N400,000 cash prizes respectively.
According to the Director, KCCN Kim Changki, the Korean government made the food contest possible by providing the needed financial support. This he added was because many Nigerians were in love with Korean foods and derive pleasure in preparing them.
He said: ” I am very pleased because Nigerians cook Korean foods very well with great taste. Our Korean chef judge highly commended the wonderful dish prepared by one of them.
“Since we started the cooking programme, Nigerian Youths have shown much interest in this competition. I want this event to continue annually with the hope that the Korean government Wil keep supporting it financially.
“The dishes that stood out to me were the Gochujang Jjigae and Doenjang Jjigae which tasted so good.
Vice President, the North Central Association of Professional Chefs, Chef Godfrey Odoh who served as a Nigerian judge for the contest, noted that the contest provides an opportunity to further expose Nigerian recipes to the global market.
“This will create more opportunities for our youths as well as create synergy between Nigerian and Korean chefs which is an awesome initiative.
“The basic concept of this competition is the Jang (Korean sauces). Interestingly, i could see that virtually all the contestants played along, along the major recipe but in every contestant or in every competition, they always have to be a winner.
“The judgment is based on the level of difficulties their composition presented and then of course, the taste of the food. Virtually all of them you know, did their best. But you know, like, I rightly said, in every competition they have to be the winner so we look forward to seeing the winner.”
