Benue SEMA Staff Land In Police Net For Diverting IDPs Relief Material

At least three members of staff of the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), names with – held, are cooling their heels in police custody over alleged diversion of assorted relief materials meant for distribution to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) of the Ichwa Camp located along the Federal University of Agriculture road in Makurdi.

SEMA’s Executive Secretary, Sir James Iorpuu, confirmed this to journalists in Makurdi yesterday. Iorpuu said: “Two trucks of assorted food items comprising 250 bags of rice, 60 bags of beans, 100 bags of garri, 200 cartons of indomie noodles,15 gallons of 20 litres red and groundnut oil, respectively, as well as sugar, among other food items, were to be distributed to the camp.

He added however that to his chagrin, he discovered that the diverted food items also included 55 bags of rice, 24 bags of garri, indomie noodles, beans among others, adding that the only thing they did not touch was sugar.

He said: “We were expecting United Nations (UN) delegation alongside the Ambassador of Germany and the Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, to set up a committee to coordinate the visit; and in the meeting, it was resolved that hence they are visiting Ichwa IDP camp some food items will be send to the camp even though we were yet to commence our monthly food distribution across the camps.”
