As the campaign season heats up ahead of the September 21 Edo State governorship election, Udoh Oberaifo, the African Action Congress (AAC) candidate, has raised alarm over what he describes as targeted attempts on his life. Oberaifo claims that he narrowly escaped three kidnapping attempts while on the campaign trail.
Speaking at a press briefing on Saturday in Benin City, Oberaifo also alleged that security personnel assigned to him have been withdrawn without explanation, leaving him vulnerable. He further accused local authorities of orchestrating the removal of his campaign billboards across the Benin metropolis, despite having already paid for the advertising space.
“I have been running my campaign with a mission to serve the people of Edo State with integrity, fairness, and a deep commitment to positive change,” Oberaifo said. “However, my safety has been severely compromised. These were not just random acts of violence—they were targeted attacks meant to silence me and disrupt the democratic process.”
Oberaifo recounted how outdoor advertising vendors informed him that they were instructed not to display his campaign materials. He expressed frustration over the withdrawal of his security details, despite his efforts to address the issue through official channels. He noted that he had written to the Inspector General of Police and met with the Deputy Inspector General in Abuja, but no action has been taken to restore his protection.
“The situation is dire. My life is at risk, and by extension, so is the democratic process in Edo State,” Oberaifo warned. “When intimidation and fear become tools in the political arsenal, we must ask ourselves what kind of democracy we are fostering.”
The AAC candidate called on the government and security agencies to act swiftly to restore his security and prevent further threats to his life. He assured his supporters that he would not be intimidated or silenced, vowing to continue his fight for a better Edo State.
Efforts to reach the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Mujiwa Adejobi, for comments on the matter were unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls or messages.
