In a dramatic confrontation, residents of Matusgi village in Talata Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara State killed at least 37 bandits who attempted to invade their community on Wednesday afternoon. The bandits, who arrived on motorbikes around 2 p.m., intended to carry out mass abductions, according to a report by *Daily Trust*.
An anonymous resident recounted that this was not the first time the villagers had faced such attacks, but it marked the first occasion where they were able to deliver significant casualties to the assailants. Forewarned of the impending attack, the villagers prepared themselves with locally-made firearms and traditional weapons.
The bandits initiated the attack by firing sporadically to intimidate the villagers, but the residents fought back fiercely. After an hour of intense fighting, the bandits were forced to retreat, leaving behind 10 of their dead. The villagers then regrouped and devised a strategy to ambush the bandits if they returned.
When the bandits attempted a second assault, the villagers launched a counterattack, killing a total of 37 bandits. Despite their victory, three villagers lost their lives in the clash.
The District Head of Matusgi, Alhaji Ciroma Muhammad, confirmed the incident, adding that neighboring villages reported seeing the bandits transporting the bodies of their fallen comrades on motorbikes. "This is the 13th time bandits have attacked this village," Alhaji Muhammad said, highlighting the ongoing violence in the area. He also mentioned a recent incident where bandits quietly abducted 23 people, mostly women, without firing any shots until after they had left.
This latest confrontation underscores the growing tension in Zamfara State, where residents are increasingly forced to defend themselves against repeated bandit attacks.
