Chidinma Onwe Adetshina has been crowned Miss Universe Nigeria 2024, just weeks after her controversial withdrawal from the Miss South Africa pageant. The 23-year-old emerged victorious over 24 other contestants during a glamorous event held at Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos on August 31.
Chidinma, who has a Nigerian father and a Mozambican mother, was invited to participate in the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant following her exit from the Miss South Africa competition. Her withdrawal came after significant backlash regarding her eligibility to represent South Africa, with critics arguing that her Nigerian heritage disqualified her from the pageant.
The controversy surrounding Chidinma's participation in Miss South Africa escalated when South Africa’s Home Affairs Minister, Leon Schreiber, launched an investigation into her citizenship. This probe was initiated following requests from the pageant organizers and mounting public outcry. The investigation reportedly uncovered that the identity of a South African woman may have been used fraudulently by Chidinma’s mother, leading to further complications and ultimately prompting Chidinma to step down from the competition.
Despite the challenges, Chidinma’s journey took a positive turn as she claimed the Miss Universe Nigeria title, marking a significant achievement in her pageantry career.
