Tragedy struck along the Warrake-Afuze Road in Owan East Local Government Area, where a fatal accident resulted in the deaths of five individuals. The collision occurred when a Toyota Camry, carrying the victims, collided with a campaign convoy negotiating a bend.
The driver of the Camry, identified as Emmanuel Edionwe, along with four other occupants, died at the scene. A fifth victim was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
Witnesses reported that the Toyota Camry was traveling in the opposite direction of the campaign convoy when the crash happened. The victims were returning from a funeral ceremony, leaving their families grief-stricken and in shock.
The bodies of the deceased have been taken to the Edo State University Mortuary in Etsako West Local Government Area. A relative of Edionwe expressed profound sorrow, stating, “We are devastated beyond words. Emmanuel was a kind, easy-going person who did not deserve this fate. The accident claimed the lives of Emmanuel and four of his friends. Only one of them survived and is receiving treatment.”
The relative further revealed that Edionwe was initially taken to Irrua Specialist Hospital (ISH) for specialized care, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries. Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officials were responsible for removing the bodies from the crash site. Four of the victims died immediately, while one passed away later.
