A tragic accident on the Ovia River in Edo State has resulted in the deaths of two individuals, with six others rescued, after a bus veered off course and plunged into the river. The incident occurred on Thursday, September 12, 2024, following a brake failure that led to the driver losing control.
Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Edo Sector Commander Cyril Mathew confirmed the details of the accident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday. The bus, which was en route from Lagos to Port Harcourt, went off the highway and into the Ovia River around 4:20 p.m. on Thursday.
According to Mathew, the driver attempted to avoid a collision with vehicles in front by swerving into the opposite lane. The bus then crossed over from the Ore-Benin-Lagos route to the Benin-Ore road before hitting a pavement and plunging into the river.
Divers were promptly dispatched for the rescue mission, with six survivors brought to safety on Thursday evening. Unfortunately, one body was recovered dead that night, and another was found the following day. The chances of locating and rescuing any remaining passengers are now considered slim due to the time elapsed since the accident.
Efforts to recover the bodies have been complicated by the high cost of engaging divers, with ongoing negotiations for a fee of N2 million. FRSC officials continue to coordinate with rescue teams to manage the situation and recover the remaining victims.
The FRSC urges caution on the roads and continues to investigate the cause of the brake failure that led to this devastating accident.
