In a surprise operation, operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) conducted a midnight raid on private hostels at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), arresting numerous students. The raid, which occurred early Saturday morning, targeted hostels in the Kwakwalawa and Gidan Yaro communities of Sokoto.
Sources revealed that EFCC officers stormed the hostels at around 4 a.m., arresting students indiscriminately. According to eyewitnesses, the students were taken by surprise and initially believed they were under attack by kidnappers, only later realizing that the assailants were anti-corruption agents.
The EFCC has yet to release an official statement regarding the raid or the charges under which the students were arrested.
This recent operation mirrors similar incidents in the past. In February, students from the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), were similarly targeted in a raid conducted by EFCC officials. The February operation saw officers from the Benin Zonal Office break into student lodges around Orita Obele at about 2 a.m., with multiple students being arrested. Reports from that incident indicated that properties were destroyed and some students, including females, were physically assaulted during the raid.
The ongoing raids on university hostels by the EFCC have raised concerns among students, who allege mistreatment and lack of transparency in the agency's operations.
