Sironga Girls’ High School was plunged into grief on Saturday following the tragic death of 17-year-old student Mitchelle Cheptoo, who reportedly died by suicide after jumping from the second floor of the school's administration block.
The form four student, who was scheduled to sit for her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams in October, took the fatal leap around 5 a.m. while her classmates were preparing for the day ahead. School Principal Jane Nyanumba confirmed the incident, stating that Cheptoo was quickly taken to Nyamira County Referral Hospital, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
“She seemed fine and had a good night's sleep. We are shocked by this incident,” Nyanumba remarked, emphasizing that Cheptoo had shown no signs of distress leading up to her death.
Nyamira South Deputy County Commissioner Florence Obunga expressed her condolences and noted the deep impact the tragedy has had on the school community. "The girls are very devastated,” Obunga stated, adding that despite the school's robust counselling department, Cheptoo had not sought help regarding any personal struggles.
Local lawmaker Steve M. Mogaka, MP for West Mugirango, also voiced his disbelief over the unfortunate event and called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Cheptoo's death. He emphasized the need for greater mental health awareness in educational institutions, pledging to draft a motion in Parliament to include counselling lessons in the school curriculum.
The reasons behind Cheptoo's suicide remain unclear, prompting ongoing investigations. This heartbreaking incident has shed light on the critical need for mental health support for students, especially those facing the pressures of national examinations like the KCSE.
