First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has pledged a donation of N1 billion to Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, aimed at revitalising and restoring the institution’s aesthetic appeal.

During the commissioning of a 2.7-kilometre road and the unveiling of a grand pavilion, both projects funded by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and named in her honour, Senator Tinubu expressed concern over the campus’ deteriorating beauty.

She emphasised the need for urgent action to restore the renowned elegance that once defined the university.

“I will donate N1 billion to restore OAU’s horticultural landscape,” she said.

“This campus was stunning when I was a student here. It is crying out for help, and we must bring back its beauty,” she added.

Senator Tinubu highlighted the administration’s focus on education and youth development under President Bola Tinubu, ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder students from accessing education.

She pointed to the launch of the National Students Loan Scheme as a key initiative to support this vision and urged Nigerian youth to take full advantage of the program.

Additionally, she spoke of her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), which has launched the National Scholarship Programme (NASP) for tertiary education.

The programme provides N1 million annually and new laptops to 47 underprivileged students across the nation for the duration of their studies.

“To further support education, I’ve adopted the #WeAreEqual campaign by the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) in Nigeria, focusing on education,” Senator Tinubu added.

In his remarks, Oba Ogunwusi commended Senator Tinubu for her contributions to educational development in Nigeria, noting that the road, pavilion, and hostel were named in her honour to recognise her dedication to uplifting youth and women’s rights through education.

“Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s commitment to advancing education and her advocacy for women and youth has left a lasting impact on Nigerian society,”
said the Ooni.
