In a surprising turn of events, Isaac Fayose, brother of former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, has proclaimed himself the new National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This bold assertion comes alongside the suspension of several high-profile party members, including Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Nyesom Wike, Ayo Fayose, and Seyi Makinde, who were part of the G5 faction.

During a press briefing, Isaac Fayose announced that he has taken action against the current Acting National Chairman, Mr. Damagum, stating, “It’s official, now I’m the new national chairman of the PDP. The current [Acting] National Chairman has been suspended, and I’ve instructed security at Wadata House to keep the keys with the Secretariat.”

Fayose emphasized that any members unhappy with his decision should seek legal recourse rather than cause disruption at the party's secretariat. “If you’re not happy, please, we don’t want you to come to the secretariat to make trouble. You can go to court. The NWC has suspended some of you; drop all your PDP materials with security at Wadata. The former G5 members, including Wike, Fayose, and Governor Seyi Makinde, have also been suspended,” he declared. “Even Atiku has been suspended because his ambition is causing us headaches.”

This internal strife within the PDP comes on the heels of a faction within the National Working Committee (NWC) that had previously suspended Damagum and other party leaders, including National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, and National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade.

However, legal complications arose when the Abuja Federal High Court intervened, restraining the PDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and Board of Trustees (BoT) from removing Damagum as Acting National Chairman. The court ruled that no individual other than Damagum may be recognized as the PDP national chairman until the party's national convention scheduled for December next year.

As tensions within the party escalate, it remains to be seen how this power struggle will unfold and what implications it will have for the PDP’s future.
