In a daring assault on Sunday, bandits launched an attack on General Lawal B. Muhammad (rtd), the Director General of the Zamfara State Community Protection Guards (CPG), while ambushing motorists in Kucheri village, located within the Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
According to reports, the armed bandits blocked the busy Funtua-Tsafe road in the late evening, targeting vehicles indiscriminately, including one carrying General Muhammad. During the violent encounter, several passengers were kidnapped by the attackers.
An official from the Zamfara State Ministry of Internal Security, who chose to remain anonymous, confirmed the incident to *Daily Trust*, revealing that General Muhammad is currently receiving treatment at Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital in Gusau, the state capital. "It is confirmed that the DG of Community Protection Guards was shot and is now undergoing medical care," the source stated.
This attack comes on the heels of escalating violence in the region. Just days earlier, bandits killed eight CPG personnel and a commercial driver in Tsafe. In a separate but related incident, the bandits clashed with soldiers in Unguwar Chida village, leading to the death of a commercial driver and injuring three soldiers. The village is situated near Magazu, along the same Funtua-Gusau road.
Reacting to the attack, General Muhammad, who was shot in the ambush, expressed his frustration over the deteriorating security situation in the area. He disclosed that he had stationed 105 CPG personnel in Tsafe to safeguard travelers after noticing frequent attacks by bandits. "It is unfortunate," the General lamented, explaining how his men were ambushed while disembarking from their patrol van.
The simultaneous attacks have heightened concerns about the worsening security crisis in Zamfara State, where banditry continues to wreak havoc on local communities and travelers.
