Social media influencer and Abuja-based chef Thelma Ujunwa has expressed her deep frustration with body shaming and social media bullying, asserting that such negativity can have dire consequences, including driving some women to extreme measures.
In a recent statement, Thelma emphasized the impact of harmful comments on women’s mental health, stating, “Some of your hateful comments are the reasons why some ladies go under the knife just to achieve a 'perfect' body, and tragically, some do not survive the procedures.”
Despite her confident demeanor and striking appearance, Thelma has faced her own share of disparaging remarks, fueling her passion for advocating against body shaming and online harassment.
“Many women have been pushed into depression due to relentless abuse and body shaming, often coming from men but also from other women,” she lamented. “So many women feel uncomfortable in their own skin because of what they have been told. Your comments, whether online or in person, can irreparably damage how someone views themselves. Just because you have a phone doesn't give you the right to spread stereotypes and engage in cyberbullying. Such behavior can lead individuals to make life-altering decisions.”
Thelma's heartfelt message serves as a reminder of the profound effects of social media commentary on mental health and self-esteem, urging individuals to reconsider their words before hitting “send.”
