A Nigerian woman's engagement has been called off after her fiancé expressed discomfort with her newly secured job, which came with a significantly higher salary than his. The couple, who had been planning their traditional wedding for November, are now going their separate ways.
According to a close friend of the woman, identified as @Starbede on X (formerly Twitter), the engagement had taken place in May this year. However, tension arose when the woman landed a new position last month, offering a salary three times that of her fiancé’s.
Rather than celebrating her success, the fiancé reportedly demanded that she reject the job offer, fearing that her increased earnings would disrupt the balance of their relationship and cause a lack of respect toward him.
In a post shared by @Starbede, the friend recounted the emotional turmoil. "My friend got engaged in May, and their traditional wedding was meant to be in November. Yesterday, she called me in tears to tell me the engagement had been called off."
The friend continued, "She got a new job last month with a salary so huge that she will earn three times more than her fiancé. He was uncomfortable and asked her to reject the offer, saying she wouldn’t respect him if she made that much. Despite efforts to convince him otherwise, he insisted, and the engagement was called off."
The story, shared widely on social media, has sparked a debate about gender roles and financial dynamics in relationships, with many expressing shock that such a situation could unfold in 2024.
