\In a tragic incident in Edo State, gunmen have reportedly killed a Police Inspector, an expatriate, and three workers from a quarry company located in Ihievbe-Ogben, within the Owan East Local Government Area. The attack occurred as the victims were leaving work, prompting concerns about safety in the region.
Sources indicate that a Police Sergeant was also injured in the attack, suffering a gunshot wound to the leg, while a female staff member, believed to be an accountant for the company, remains missing. The identities of the deceased individuals have yet to be confirmed, but officials reported that the Police Inspector and the Sergeant were serving as orderlies to the expatriate at the time of the assault.
The Edo State Police Command confirmed the attack, stating that three individuals were killed, including the Police Inspector. Yamu Moses, the Public Relations Officer for the command, stated that an investigation is currently underway, and efforts are being made in collaboration with the military to apprehend the suspects involved.
Local residents, speaking on condition of anonymity, reported that the Police Inspector died instantly from his injuries, while the expatriate succumbed to his wounds at a nearby hospital. The injured Sergeant is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed medical facility.
Witnesses allege that the gunmen ambushed the expatriate while he was traveling to his residence after work, raising alarm over the ongoing violence in the area. The Ihievbe-Ogben community, situated on the border between Owan East and Akoko-Edo local government areas, has gained notoriety for kidnappings and attacks on law enforcement.
This incident adds to a troubling pattern of violence in the region, where police officers have previously been killed at a local police post and numerous individuals have been reported kidnapped. The community is calling for increased security measures to protect residents and prevent further tragedies.
