A suspected car snatcher, identified as Bashir, narrowly escaped death at the hands of an angry mob in Ondo State.

Bashir attempted to strangle a woman and steal her car on Monday morning in a dramatic incident that unfolded around 8:35 a.m. at the Quarter Guard junction in Akure, the state capital.

The woman, who was on her way to drop off her son at school, had stopped to cross the road to refuel her black Nissan Sunny.

According to eyewitness accounts, as she prepared to cross, the suspect, who had been seen praying by the roadside, suddenly rushed into her car.

He violently grabbed the steering wheel and began strangling her in an attempt to steal the car.

The woman, whose identity has been withheld, shouted for help, attracting the attention of passers-by.

A crowd quickly gathered, and outraged witnesses intervened, rescuing her from the attack.

Bashir was caught in the act and severely beaten by the mob, who were enraged by his brutal assault.

Fortunately, officers of the Amotekun Corps arrived at the scene in time to rescue the suspect from being lynched by the mob.

The suspect, who only spoke Hausa, expressed remorse for his actions, apologizing profusely.

The woman recounted the terrifying experience, saying: “I was so shocked with what I experienced this morning while taking my boy to school.

“The suspect was praying by the roadside when I wanted to cross the highway to buy fuel.

“He suddenly opened the door, pressed my oesophagus, and started dragging the steering wheel with me.”

Local authorities have confirmed that the suspect is in custody and investigations are ongoing to determine if he is connected to any other incidents of car theft in the area.
