A post from X has become a focal point for a larger discussion on gender roles and the expectations society places on women, particularly regarding their careers and family life.
The controversy began when a young woman using the handle “I Am Huwa” shared a heartfelt message about her academic journey and her passion for sustainable building materials.
Her tweet read: "This year has been the hardest I'm not gonna lie. But in all things, I try to celebrate the little wins. I completed my Master's in Minerals and Materials Science and have begun my PhD in Civil Engineering in Paris. In 2 days, I will be 27 years old."
Huwa, a graduate of Chemical Engineering from the University of Benin (Uniben), also expressed her dedication to researching and optimizing earthen materials for sustainable building, referencing her fascination with the clay used to construct the historic walls of the Benin Empire. Her tweet continued: "My focus is on optimizing earthen materials to become viable options for sustainable building. I completed my Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering by 2020, Uniben, and have been obsessed with clay as building materials since I read about the walls of the great Benin Empire."
While many congratulated her for the accomplishments and dedication to her field, the post also attracted attention from “Masculine Empire,” a user who criticized her career-focused approach, arguing that at 27, women should prioritize family life over professional milestones. His controversial tweet read: "As much as this is an achievement, career doesn't favour women in the long run. At 27, a woman should be under a good masculine man with children and a good home. Not bragging online."
