The Defence Headquarters has detained a naval officer, identified as A. Akila, for allegedly shooting and killing a fellow serviceman in Zamfara State. The incident reportedly took place in the early hours of Friday, October 25, 2024.
Major General Buba Edward, Director of Defence Media Operations, confirmed to *The Punch* that Akila, deployed to Forward Operating Base Dansadua for Operation Fansan Yamma, allegedly opened fire on his colleague under what he described as “questionable circumstances.”
"At approximately 3:12 a.m., on October 25, 2024, naval personnel LS Akila A., stationed at FOB Dansadua for Operation Fansan Yamma, began firing and fatally wounded a fellow military member,” Buba explained. “Following the incident, Akila was disarmed, detained, and an investigation is now in progress."
General Edward further noted that, upon completion of the investigation, the case would be presented to a standing court-martial established for such serious breaches of conduct within the military. The family of the deceased is in the process of being notified, with the individual’s name to be released to the public once the formalities are completed.
The incident underscores concerns surrounding personnel conduct within the armed forces and the military's commitment to upholding accountability.
