At the 2024 Annual Directors Conference Dinner, Lagos State Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat shed light on the growing pressures facing Nigeria’s largest city, revealing that over 6,000 newcomers arrive daily, with roughly half staying without traceable addresses. This surge is straining the state’s N2.2 trillion (approximately $1.3 billion) budget, which struggles to support an estimated population of 27 million—far outpaced by the $237 billion budget of New York State, a region with 19.5 million residents.
Representing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Dr. Hamzat drew comparisons with major international cities, noting that New York’s funding for child protective services alone exceeds the combined budgets of Lagos and several other Nigerian states. “Our budget falls short of the demands of a rapidly expanding population,” he explained, emphasizing that Lagos’s resource limitations are hampering efforts to provide adequate services and infrastructure.
Dr. Hamzat also addressed broader societal issues, pointing to a breakdown in family structures as a root cause of socioeconomic difficulties across Nigeria. He cited over 130,000 cases in Lagos where fathers have reportedly abandoned their families. “We must reinforce the family unit,” he urged, highlighting family stability as a foundation for sustainable social progress.
