In a heartbreaking incident, Patience Ashenenye, a 35-year-old woman, lost her life after a police vehicle collided with the commercial motorcycle she was riding, along with her three-month-old son, on October 21, 2024. The accident occurred near Ta’al Conference Hotel, close to the School of Health in Lafia.

Witnesses reported that Tasiu Mohammed, the motorcycle rider, and both Ashenenye and her infant son sustained severe injuries in the crash. While the child and Mohammed were rushed to the Federal University of Lafia Teaching Hospital for emergency treatment, Ashenenye was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival.

Following the tragedy, two Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) approached Ashenenye's family with an offer of ₦100,000 to assist with her burial costs. However, the grieving family declined the money, expressing their desire for justice over financial compensation. George Akube, Ashenenye’s younger brother, stated, “We are not interested in the money; we want justice for my sister.”

Akube shared that witnesses claimed the police officer, driving a Hilux from the government house, was speeding at the time of the accident. “The damage was significant to both parties. The policeman survived, but my sister died, and her son’s leg is broken,” he said. The family was holding a wake-keep for Ashenenye when the police arrived to make their offer.

The spokesperson for the Nasarawa State Police Command, Ramhan Nansel, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are ongoing. He mentioned that the officer involved in the crash was hospitalized due to shock. “Mrs. Patience Akla Ashenenye unfortunately passed away while receiving medical attention, while her son and the motorcyclist sustained fractures and are currently undergoing treatment,” Nansel added.

In response to the family's concerns, Nansel clarified that the ₦100,000 offer was meant to alleviate medical expenses, and he assured that the police department would cover all treatment costs for those injured in the accident. He also mentioned that the police officer involved had visited Ashenenye’s family after his discharge from the hospital.

“The Commissioner of Police, Umar Shehu Nadada, has expressed his condolences to the family over their tragic loss and assured them that justice will be pursued,” Nansel stated. The investigation remains ongoing at the State Motor Traffic Division as the community mourns the untimely death of Patience Ashenenye.
