A newly surfaced terror group, known as Lakurawa, is reportedly offering substantial financial incentives to attract young men into its ranks, according to Lake Chad Basin counterterrorism expert Zagazola Makama. On Saturday, Makama shared on his social media platform that Lakurawa is recruiting local youths in Sokoto with offers of up to one million naira in exchange for allegiance.
Sources have informed Makama that Lakurawa is composed of fighters from across the region, including individuals from Mali, Chad, Libya, Niger, and Burkina Faso. The group, he reported, employs a blend of financial incentives and ideological persuasion to attract young recruits, appealing to economically vulnerable communities.
Unlike typical criminal gangs, Lakurawa reportedly adheres to extremist ideologies linked to the Khawarij sect, which bears similarities to the beliefs held by Boko Haram. Makama’s sources further revealed that the group is enforcing its control in various areas, driving out bandits and seizing livestock from local communities.
Though the Lakurawa group has yet to launch attacks in the Northwest, security experts are closely monitoring their activities, noting the group’s rapid expansion and ideological influence.
