Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface is set to miss the rest of 2024 following a thigh injury he sustained during Nigeria's recent Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Rwanda. Boniface, 23, exited the pitch in the 89th minute, replaced by Umar Sadiq, as Nigeria fell 2-1 to Rwanda. The injury, reportedly a torn muscle fiber, will prevent Boniface from contributing to his club’s title chase for the foreseeable future.
Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso addressed the media with cautious optimism ahead of their match against Heidenheim. “He will miss a few games. I can’t say exactly how long,” Alonso remarked. “It won’t be six to eight weeks. We hope he can still play this year.”
This setback is the second major injury for Boniface in 2024, following an abductor injury that kept him sidelined for much of last season's second half. Despite these health challenges, Boniface has shined in the Bundesliga, with six goals and an assist in his first 10 league games this season, establishing himself as one of Leverkusen's top performers.
In Boniface's absence, Leverkusen will look to forward Patrik Schick and newcomer Martin Terrier to step up. However, both players will need to improve their form to match Boniface's impact, especially with Bayern Munich’s strong lead in the Bundesliga standings.
The team now faces added pressure as they aim to maintain their title ambitions without their star Nigerian forward, who has been pivotal in their offensive lineup this season.
