A Special Anti-Cultism Court in Abeokuta, Ogun State, sentenced 27-year-old Afeeze Ishola to seven years in prison on Friday for his involvement in a secret cult. Ishola, a resident of Otitoloju Street, Mile 2, along Ayetoro Road, was convicted on a one-count charge of belonging to an unlawful society.
Magistrate J.A. Akan, who presided over the case, stated that the prosecution had proven Ishola’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, based on compelling evidence. Consequently, Akan sentenced him to seven years in a correctional facility with no option for a fine.
According to Prosecutor Inspector Olaide Rawlings, Ishola was arrested in the early hours of September 2, 2022, at Opara II Estate, Rounder, Abeokuta. Rawlings informed the court that Ishola was stopped by a community security guard while wandering through the neighborhood. Upon questioning, Ishola allegedly confessed that he was attempting to escape from a rival cult group that had threatened his life. He was subsequently handed over to a police officer residing in the area.
Rawlings further testified that Ishola is a member of the Eiye Confraternity, a secret cult, and presented Ishola's confessional statement as part of the prosecution’s evidence. The prosecutor highlighted that Ishola’s actions violate Section 34 and are punishable under Section 36 of the 2016 Anti-Violence and Related Offences Law, which prohibits forcible occupation, armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism, and similar crimes.
This sentencing reflects Ogun State's continued crackdown on cultism and related violent crimes, as the state remains committed to upholding public safety.
