Emeka Rollas, President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), has clarified why the guild cannot pursue legal action against actress Adanma Luke following the tragic death of actor Junior Pope and four crew members in April. Pope died after their boat capsized in the River Niger near Asaba, Delta State, en route to a movie location for the film *The Other Side of Life*, produced by Luke. She has since been suspended by the AGN.
In a recent interview on Arise TV, Rollas explained that legal restrictions prevent the AGN from suing Luke. "Initially, we planned to pursue a lawsuit," he said. "However, consultations with our legal adviser revealed that the AGN does not have the standing to take legal action since Junior Pope was not a dues-paying member at the time of his death. The contract he signed with the producer only permits his immediate family or spouse to sue."
Rollas also discussed efforts to improve the AGN’s internal structure, revealing that the guild plans to implement actor licensing, inspired by international practices observed during a recent trip to Los Angeles. He further noted that Junior Pope had not paid his guild dues for over a year prior to his passing, underscoring the need for better organization within the guild.
The AGN president’s comments shed light on both the guild's current limitations and its future plans to enhance member accountability and professional standards.
