A Nigerian man, Franklin Obiajuru Egwuatu, has accused officers of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) of assaulting him and extorting N100,000 under false accusations of being an internet fraudster, commonly referred to as a "Yahoo boy." The incident, which occurred on Friday, November 29, 2024, took place along the Seme-Badagry highway, a notorious hotspot for border-related incidents.
According to Egwuatu, he was traveling from the Benin Republic, where he has lived since 2017. He described being treated as a criminal and physically assaulted by the officers, who demanded he transfer money to a Moniepoint Microfinance Bank account linked to Apexze Global Concept Limited, a company registered in Badagry.
Egwuatu told SaharaReporters that despite the officers finding no incriminating evidence on his phone, they insisted he was involved in internet fraud due to his wife’s phone number, which is registered in the Benin Republic. He claimed that after being beaten and threatened with death, he was forced to transfer N100,000 to the account of Apexze Global Concept Limited, owned by Joy Yakubu.
A check by SaharaReporters revealed that Apexze Global Concept Limited was recently incorporated on August 7, 2023, with a business address in Badagry. Despite the lack of evidence against him, Egwuatu said the officers continued to accuse him of fraudulent activities simply based on his appearance and his ties to Benin.
The NIS has not yet issued a statement regarding the incident, which reflects ongoing concerns about extortion and abuse of power by personnel operating in border areas. The Nigerian Immigration Service has long been criticized for such practices, which also affect both Nigerians and foreign nationals crossing the country’s borders.
