The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has strongly denied claims that it approved a herbal product marketed as “lung-cleansing tea” for smokers.
In a statement issued on Saturday, December 14, NAFDAC’s Director-General, Mojisola Adeyeye, clarified that the product, known as Lungitox (Smokers Pride), was never approved by the agency. She revealed that the application for its registration was rejected due to unproven health claims and potential public health risks.
“The attention of NAFDAC has been drawn to a misleading video circulating on social media, alleging that the agency approved a product claiming that ‘smoking is healthy’ when used alongside their herbal tea,” the statement read. “We categorically state that this claim is false and entirely unfounded. Lung Detox Tea or Lungitox (Smokers Pride) is not registered by NAFDAC. The application for registration was outrightly rejected due to the unsubstantiated and dangerous claim that smoking could be made ‘healthy’ through its use.”
The agency emphasized its unwavering commitment to protecting public health and ensuring that only safe, scientifically validated products are available to consumers.
“NAFDAC remains resolute in its mandate to protect public health by ensuring the safety, efficacy, and proper validation of all products. We strongly condemn any attempt to mislead the public with false claims and urge Nigerians to disregard the video in circulation. Suspicious products or claims should be promptly reported to the agency,” Adeyeye added.
For further inquiries or to report any suspicious activities, the agency advised the public to contact its helpline at 0800-162-3322, email [email protected], or visit its official website at www.nafdac.gov.ng.
NAFDAC assured Nigerians of its continued vigilance in safeguarding public health and warned against the marketing of products that undermine regulatory standards.
