Nigerian Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage has voiced her frustrations about the criticism she often receives for her fashion choices, attributing it to age-shaming.
Speaking during an episode of the *Receipts* podcast, the 44-year-old singer and mother of one opened up about the backlash she faces for wearing bold outfits, particularly in her home country.
Savage highlighted the contrast between the reception she gets and how older female celebrities like Beyoncé are celebrated internationally for their beauty and confidence.
“They age-shame me every single day,” she said. “They say, ‘A woman of your age, how can you be wearing a bikini?’ I can because I have a body. Beyoncé is in her 40s and wears bikinis, but Americans don’t age-shame her. They celebrate her and say, ‘Black don’t crack.’ It’s celebrated when you look good at an older age.”
The music icon lamented that, in Nigeria, such choices are often met with criticism and moral judgments, with detractors claiming her fashion choices might embarrass her son in the future.
Responding to such remarks, Savage said, “When my son grows up, he’s going to see this and think, ‘My mum is a powerful and beautiful woman.’”
The singer, who has remained a prominent figure in the global Afrobeats movement, emphasized her right to express herself through her fashion, regardless of societal expectations tied to her age.
Savage’s remarks have sparked conversations about cultural double standards, ageism, and the pressures faced by women in the public eye.
