Rivers State Police Command has apprehended a suspected kidnap kingpin, 30-year-old Nwile Bete, in a successful operation that also led to the rescue of a 10-year-old boy abducted in Port Harcourt.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, disclosed the breakthrough in a statement issued on Friday, detailing the events surrounding the arrest and rescue.
Bete allegedly kidnapped the child on November 25, demanding a ransom of N5 million for his release. The victim's mother promptly reported the incident to the police, prompting swift action by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit.
“Acting on credible intelligence, officers tracked the suspect to Rumuekeni School Road in Rumuekeni Town, Port Harcourt, where he was apprehended,” said Iringe-Koko.
During interrogation, Bete confessed to the crime and led the operatives to Sogho village in the Khana area, where the young victim was found unharmed. The boy has since been reunited with his family.
Police have launched further investigations to track down other members of the suspect’s gang who remain at large.
Iringe-Koko reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling criminal activities in Rivers State, assuring residents that efforts to curb kidnapping and other crimes are ongoing.
