A Chief Magistrate Court in Osogbo has ordered the remand of a mother and her two sons at the Ilesa Correctional Centre for allegedly stealing cocoa beans worth N4.5 million.
The defendants, identified as 45-year-old Iyanda Olubunmi and her sons, Joshua Iyanda, 24, and Prosper Iyanda, 21, were arraigned on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, on charges of conspiracy and theft.
The cocoa beans were reportedly stolen from the residence of a farmer, Akeem Obidiran, in Temidire Village, Oriade Local Government Area of Osun State. Their attempt to sell the stolen produce was foiled by operatives of the Osun Amotekun Corps, who acted swiftly following a report from the victim.
The suspects were apprehended while transporting the stolen goods, which were subsequently recovered. According to the prosecutor, the theft violates Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Vol. II, Laws of Osun State, 2002.
During interrogation and court proceedings, the accused admitted to the crime, claiming it was their first offense and pleading for leniency. They cited financial desperation as their motive for committing the act.
Chief Magistrate A.O. Odeleye stressed the gravity of the offense, highlighting its detrimental effects on individuals' livelihoods and the local economy. The court remanded the trio in custody until the next hearing, scheduled for January 29, 2025, to enable the prosecution to build its case.
The incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by rural communities in safeguarding their livelihoods against criminal activities.
