A High Court in Akwukwu-Igbo, Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State, has sentenced Obinna Eze to death by hanging for the murder of six-month-old Chimaobi Igwe.
Eze was convicted on three charges: attempted murder, murder, and causing grievous bodily harm, under sections 320, 319, and 335 of the Criminal Code Laws of Delta State.
The case was prosecuted by Mr. Omamuzo Erebe, the State Solicitor-General, alongside other legal experts, including J.A. Otite, Solomon Funkekeme Jr., M.C. Okafor, and Mrs. Betty Adams.
Testifying in court, Mrs. Blessing Igwe, the mother of the deceased, described a violent confrontation with Eze on October 27, 2023, over a missing phone. She stated that during the altercation, Eze attacked her with a cutlass, inflicting severe injuries on her and her baby, Chimaobi. Despite being rushed to the hospital, the baby succumbed to the injuries a week later.
A pathologist confirmed the cause of death as deep penetrating injuries to the head, consistent with being struck by a sharp object, such as a cutlass.
Justice Marcel Okoh, in delivering the verdict, emphasized that the prosecution had presented sufficient evidence, including witness testimony, medical reports, and a confessional statement from the defendant. Despite Eze's denial and retraction of his confession, the court found him guilty and sentenced him to death by hanging for the murder of Chimaobi Igwe.
