According to Commissioner of Police Gyogon Grimah, Godday was invited to Akamkpa on December 6, accompanied by her two young children, ages five and three. Upon arrival, the couple reportedly took her and the children to Aba, Abia State, where they separated the mother from her children.
When Godday realized her children were missing, she returned to Akamkpa, traced the couple to their home, and alerted the police. Investigations revealed that Akpan and his wife had been involved in child trafficking, having previously sold a six-year-old child for N800,000. They were reportedly planning to sell Godday’s children for a sum of N2.4 million.
Grimah condemned the crime as a violation of human rights and an offense that should never be tolerated in any society. He also noted that the police had made significant progress this year, with 399 cases charged to court, 19 prosecutions concluded, and 15 convictions obtained.
During questioning, Akpan admitted to luring Godday to Akamkpa with the intent to sell her children but claimed it was their first involvement in child trafficking. “We do not even know how much we would have been given for the sale of the children, and we deeply regret our actions,” he said.
The case highlights the growing issue of child trafficking in the region, and authorities have vowed to continue their efforts to crack down on such crimes.
