The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested 15 suspects following a violent clash between rival youth groups in the Kandahar area of Bauchi metropolis, which led to the burning of a government primary school and a Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) office.
The violent incident unfolded when a group of youths attacked civilians in the area, setting fire to both the JTF office and part of the Kandahar Primary School. The clash intensified when the attackers faced resistance from members of the Civilian JTF. During the unrest, one of the assailants, identified as 22-year-old Saidu Musa, sustained gunshot wounds and was later transported to the Specialist Hospital for medical treatment.
It took the quick intervention of police operatives to restore calm to the affected area.
In a statement released on Sunday, the police spokesperson, SP Ahmed Wakili, confirmed that an investigation is ongoing to determine the full cause of the violence. Preliminary findings indicated that the attack stemmed from tensions between the youth groups and the Civilian JTF, following a prior altercation between them.
“The conflict began on December 18, 2024, when a group of youths attacked civilians and set fire to the Civilian JTF office and part of the State Government Primary School,” Wakili explained. “During the attack, one of the assailants, Saidu Musa, was shot in the chest by a locally-made firearm and was rushed for treatment.”
Wakili continued, “The violence escalated on December 19, 2024, when the disgruntled youths regrouped and launched a retaliatory assault against the JTF office and the school, causing significant damage. Police operatives quickly responded to the scene, de-escalating the situation and arresting 15 suspects linked to the unrest.”
The Bauchi State Police Command has assured that the investigation into the incident is ongoing, and further developments will be communicated to the public.
