The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has apprehended four minors accused of stealing iron rods from an uncompleted building in the Guzape area of Abuja. The suspects, identified as Matthew Vincent (15), Timothy Shedrack (15), Moses Vincent (11), and Lucky Enock, were caught following a tip-off from concerned residents.

Locals had reported unusual nighttime activity at the construction site, observing the minors entering the premises under the cover of darkness. Witnesses described hearing loud noises and spotting the children swiftly dismantling parts of the structure. According to preliminary investigations, the suspects gained access by scaling the fence and used improvised tools to remove the iron rods. The stolen materials were allegedly sold to a local scrap dealer known as “Babanbola.”

The police are currently searching for Babanbola, who is suspected of being part of a larger network involved in the theft and illegal sale of construction materials in the region. Authorities have expressed concern over the rising trend of juvenile delinquency in the FCT.

Speaking to journalists, the FCT Police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the arrests and urged parents and guardians to closely monitor their children’s activities. She emphasized the need for proper guidance to deter minors from engaging in criminal behavior.

“The Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has called on parents to take active roles in their children’s upbringing and ensure they are supervised, especially during late hours,” Adeh said. She also encouraged community members to report suspicious activities to the authorities and support measures aimed at fostering safer neighborhoods.

Additionally, business owners and scrap dealers have been advised to verify the sources of materials before purchase and to report individuals attempting to sell stolen goods. Construction site owners have been urged to enhance security measures, such as employing guards and installing surveillance systems.

The arrested minors will be transferred to juvenile homes for rehabilitation, and those found culpable will face legal consequences. The FCT Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order and addressing the challenges posed by juvenile crime.
