*The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Abia State has apprehended two individuals suspected of child trafficking and abduction in Aba. The operation led to the rescue of a three-year-old girl, Chiamaka Ahamefula.*

The arrest, announced by the command's spokesperson, ASC Doreen Udugwu, in a statement on Saturday, December 28, 2024, took place on December 26 following a tip-off from a concerned citizen. The suspects, identified as 24-year-old Uche Royal from Ohaji, Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, and 20-year-old Chidera Donatus from Nenwe, Ogwu Local Government Area of Enugu State, were apprehended during a covert operation.

The rescued child, Chiamaka Ahamefula, hails from Ukpaka Ukwu in Umuahia, Abia State. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were part of a broader trafficking network. According to Udugwu, Donatus was introduced to Royal by an accomplice named Danji, who is reportedly on the run.

“Initial findings indicate that the suspects and their accomplice, Danji, have been involved in this criminal trade for an extended period,” the statement noted.

State Commandant Akinsola Aderemi expressed the Corps' determination to dismantle child trafficking networks in Abia State. He assured the public that investigations would be thorough and that efforts were underway to apprehend other collaborators.

“This command remains steadfast in its commitment to bringing perpetrators of such heinous crimes to justice. Once investigations are complete, the case will be handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for prosecution,” Aderemi stated.

The Commandant also urged parents to remain vigilant and take active roles in safeguarding their children. He called on the public to provide credible intelligence about suspicious activities in their communities.

The NSCDC's swift action highlights the importance of collaboration between security agencies and community members in combating child trafficking and ensuring the safety of vulnerable individuals.
