National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) operatives have arrested a 48-year-old businessman for attempting to smuggle heroin and cocaine on an Air France flight from Abuja to Paris.
Orizu Ifeanyi Arthur, who hails from Lagos, was apprehended on Sunday, December 22, 2024, while attempting to board flight AF844 at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. The suspect had ingested 74 wraps of the illicit substances in a bid to evade security detection.
NDLEA operatives intercepted Orizu during the standard outward clearance of passengers. When asked to undergo a body scan, Orizu initially refused, citing medical concerns. He was subsequently detained for further observation. Over the course of seven days, he excreted the drugs, which were confirmed to be a mixture of heroin and cocaine.
In his statement, Orizu revealed that he owns a shop in Balogun Market, Lagos, where he sells school and travel bags. He explained that he had been promised a payment of 3,000 Euros for successfully delivering the drugs to a contact in Paris.
Orizu’s arrest has drawn attention to ongoing efforts by the NDLEA to curb drug trafficking and the increasingly creative methods employed by traffickers to smuggle narcotics across international borders. The suspect remains in custody, awaiting further legal proceedings.
